Meet Artist & Designer Shyne

Tell us about the two of you and how you got started

I entered the world of visual arts in middle school when Instagram and VSCO first came out. I was always drawn to photography, and then I discovered the world of fan editing (embarrassing lol), which is how I got started with graphic design. I was using Photoshop and creating all these fan edits, which helped me realize that I was passionate about design even though I didn’t know fully what it was. And now I’m pursuing a BA in Graphic Design!

What inspires the art that you two create?

Every piece is a little different, but at the end of the day my art is a result of my personal interests. I’m a bit of an old soul in that I love the idea of the good life - somewhere on a Hawaiian island, surfing, drinking coffee, painting, all that good stuff. A lot of my work reflects those good vibes and just a fun, positive lifestyle. I’m also inspired by skate/streetwear, but boarding culture and streetwear have always been intertwined, so it’s easy for me to flow between all of those niches.

What is the biggest challenge you face as an artist/entrepreneur?

I think the biggest challenge I face as an artist/entrepreneur is myself. I’m so ambitious to a fault. I love a little bit of everything, and I can’t bear the idea of doing the same thing for the rest of my life. It keeps things fun, but I also kind of fear that I won’t master anything because I’m too spread out all over the place!

What advice do you have for other artists starting out?

My advice for other artists starting out is, as Nike says, Just Do It! You have to get started, that’s the hardest part. But once you’re in it every day, you’ll improve and your momentum will take you places. The biggest thing I’ve learned is to build community - reach out to people and companies who you admire, engage on social media with others, make friends who are artists as well and you’ll have opportunities coming from places you never expected.

Your favorite quote to live by?

“What you do in the lives of people moves the heart of God.” I think of my art as a way to serve people and as Van Gogh says, there’s nothing truly more artistic than to love people :)

Favorite artist?

I have so many, but I’ll have to say right now Hannah Eddy (@hannaheddyart) is serving the perfect summer vibes. She’s a great illustrator whose rad artwork carries a positive message. An inspo for sure.

Anything else you’d like to add:

I’ve legitimately had conversations with friends about Her Waves before, and now I’m doing this interview. Nothing is impossible! Keep working towards your goals and putting yourself out there.

I’m inspired by the water, the sun, the moon, and the stars. My countless wipeouts, my dreams of noseriding, and the feeling I get when sliding across the face of a wave.
