So, tell us a little about yourself:

My name is Rita Goldfarb. Not Rita Gold. I’m a lady. I often get asked if I am a man off of Instagram, and I’m not 100% sure why ha. I grew up in Ontario, Canada. I moved to the west coast almost over 14 years ago. I love it here and I know this is where I am meant to be. I live a pretty quiet life with my husband and 3 dogs. About 98% of the time I feel like I am on vacation it took a lot of craziness to get here, but I am so thankful.

What inspires the photographs you take?

Movement. Joy. Freedom.

What is the biggest challenge you face as a photographer/entrepreneur?

Being valued for my time. I think when someone sees a photograph they see a photo. They don’t see the time, energy, planning and execution it took to make that photograph.

What have you learned that you would love to share with others starting out with photography?

Don’t stop shooting. Shoot anything or anyone, because if you aren’t shooting you aren’t learning.

How long have you been surfing and what does surfing mean to you?

I grew up on a lake and didn’t live near a surf spot until a few years ago. The boys in high school used to jump off the pier in the wintertime and surf the lake… that was my first introduction to surfing, but I didn’t dare do it.  There are only two places you can really surf in Canada (other than the lakes) and I was fortunate enough to go and live in one of those places. For me the time I got to spend learning really helped with my anxiety. There’s just so much going on when you’re learning to surf that you have to learn to quiet your mind. That’s also why I take photographs. There’s something about being behind the lens and that is why I ultimately wanted to shoot surf.

What’s your favorite funny or inspirational quote?

This is in no way an inspirational quote, but it’s something I say often and I am sure many others have said it…

If you’re not having fun... it’s time to get out.

I’m inspired by the water, the sun, the moon, and the stars. My countless wipeouts, my dreams of noseriding, and the feeling I get when sliding across the face of a wave.
