Tell us about you

I’m Jennipher and I live in Leucadia, California. I love surfing, snowboarding, soccer, music and traveling. I grew up in San Diego and have spent most of my career creating web and mobile applications for software startups.

I founded Her Waves in 2019 and now run it full time along with my business partner Ashleigh Yob, ex longboard pro and surf photographer

When did you start surfing?

I grew up skateboarding and snowboarding and didn’t try surfing until my early 20’s when a boyfriend taught me. He lived two blocks from Stone Steps in Encinitas and would take me out every weekend on his longboard until I got it.

Then I moved to London for college and played on the University of London’s Women's Football (soccer) team. #YNWA

When I moved back to San Diego I resumed surfing. At one point I even saved up money and quit my job for one year so I could surf more. I told my bf, I’m gonna be the oldest woman to go pro, it’s going to be very inspirational. Unfortunately, not all dreams come true.

Where is your favorite place to surf?

I love my home break, Avocados. There is something so nice about going to a break where you know everyone and the wave so well, even if it isn’t the best wave around. I also love Oceanside Harbor and Blacks in San Diego.

But my ultimate dream is to live south to surf my life away in Mexico, El Salvador, Costa Rica & Panama.

What type of board do you ride?

I used to ride only shortboards but I've been really into trying different shapes and sizes and will ride whatever makes sense for the conditions.

Right now my go-to board(s) are a 6.0 thruster shaped by Michael Baron for Byrne Surfboards, a 5'8" Fish, a 6’10" stubbie quad shaped by Christine Bradford at Furrow Surfcraft and my 7'6" Stewart Funline.

How did you come up with the idea to do Her Waves?

It started with me looking for surf-inspired clothing that fit my style. I’m not very beachy so the current styles for women don't really resonate with me.

At the same time I was discovering all these amazing female surf artists out there and thought, wouldn’t it be great if they were creating what we wear and representing who we are?

So I reached out to a few to see if they'd want to collaborate and created a few designs with them. When I’d wear them around Encinitas, a lot of ladies would ask me where I got them. That was the first sign that maybe I was on to something

Now the #1 reason I do this and what motivates me every day are the artists. They have become my friends and inspiration. All I want is to make them famous!

What is Her Waves mission now?

Her Waves is on a mission to help you live your passion & to support creative women in and out of the water.

I want to take how we (females) are represented in surf culture and turn it on it’s head. Adventure, femininity, rebellion, hope, and love - this is what we’re made of.

Her Waves strives to create a space where creatives can come together to tell the collective story of who we are, all while having fun surfing and making cool stuff together.

If you are an artist/designer/creative who is passionate about the ocean, surfing and art, I’d love to hear from you!

I’m inspired by the water, the sun, the moon, and the stars. My countless wipeouts, my dreams of noseriding, and the feeling I get when sliding across the face of a wave.
